12/18/2023 0 Comments Ge interval timer clock![]() ![]() Since the Italian for tomato is "pomodoro," he called his system the Pomodoro Technique after the original little tomato timer. And it helped-he was instantly more productive, at least when the timer was running.Īfter a bit of tweaking, testing, and refining, Cirillo settled on 25 minutes of work followed by a five-minute break, repeated four times, as the best balance for him. Cirillo started by setting it for 10 minutes and trying to just work for the 10 minutes until the timer rang. Inspiration came from a small tomato-shaped kitchen timer. He kept getting distracted and losing focus (and he didn't even have Instagram or TikTok), so he went looking for a way to keep his mind on track. Even I can keep typing that long.įrancesco Cirillo developed the Pomodoro Technique in the 1980s when he was in college in Italy and struggling to study. I'm just seven minutes into my current work block, but I know I only have to wait 18 more minutes until my next cup of coffee. That's long enough that you can stay engaged and make real progress, without feeling like it's a grind, while the 5-minute breaks, which never feel far off, give you a chance to freely check Twitter or look at some emails without overly disrupting your workflow. The work blocks are just 25 minutes long. What makes the Pomodoro Technique so effective is just how easy it is to implement. I'm using it right now to write this article. As a professional writer, it's the tool I bust out whenever I need to hit a deadline or just get work done without dawdling. While it didn't single-handedly get me through my college degrees, it helped me get better grades with less effort. I've used the Pomodoro Technique (or variations on it that we'll look at later) for more than a decade. After that, you take a 15- to 30-minute break, depending on how you feel. Here's what you do: You set a timer for 25 minutes, work until it's up, then take a 5-minute break-and repeat the whole process three more times. The Pomodoro Technique sounds unbelievably basic, but it works far better than you'd think. Does a Countdown Timer Work in Sleep Mode? If you'd like to start a countdown timer with a date and time, you can use the online countdown instead. Orpheus was the first mortal to overcome Cerberus. Hades was an excellent guardian, but he wasn’t invincible. He took the young pup and gave it to Hades, to be raised as a guardian of the underworld. Most of these monstrous children were allowed to run wild, but Zeus saw special potential in Cerberus. In reality, he was probably just afraid of provoking Typhon’s wrath! Zeus allowed all of these monsters to live, claiming that he spared their lives so that they could serve as challenges for the Greek heroes. Together, Typhon and Echidna produced Greece’s most dreaded monsters, including the Lynean Hydra, the Sphinx, the Nemean Lion, the Chimera, and, of course, Cerberus. Echidna was a half-woman, half-snake creature known as the “mother of all monsters.” She lived in a cave, where she was visited only by Typhon, her lover. He spread fear and disaster everywhere he went and terrified even the Olympian gods. Typhon was the deadliest monster in Greek mythology, a huge dragon with a hundred heads and even more wings. Legends about Cerberus AdoptionĪlthough Cerberus spent most of his life in the care of Hades, he was actually born to Typhon and Echidna. He also has a special relationship with Persephone, who he allows free passage to and from the underworld. Greek writers described him “fawning over” the new souls who arrived at the underworld, welcoming them with excited affection. Anyone, alive or dead, who tried to break these rules and sneak past Cerberus was sure to be torn to pieces-but remember, this was a duty given to him by his master, not a random slaughter of innocent victims.Ĭerberus was capable of being loving and affectionate, as well as loyal. Personalityĭespite his nightmarish appearance and his position at the gates of the underworld, Cerberus was not a demonic creature.Ībove all else, this mighty dog was loyal. Some writers claim that these serpents form a mane around his head, while others describe the serpents growing up from his spine or hanging down like tangled fur all over his body. Most writers claim that all of these heads are dog-like, but a few writers have described half of the heads as dog-like and the other half are “heads of beasts of all sorts.”Ĭerberus’s tail slowly morphs into a serpent, with a venomous head at the end, and more serpents sprout from his body. He has the body of a dog with shaggy bronze or black fur, but there ends any sort of normality to this monster.Ĭerberus has multiple heads-usually three, although some writers have given him as many as one hundred-with “eyes that flash fire,” “jagged teeth” and three tongues per mouth. As you might expect of a dog that guards the gates to the underworld, Cerberus is a ghastly monster. ![]() 12/18/2023 0 Comments Grasshopper phones![]() ![]() As mentioned earlier, the recordings could be forwarded via e-mail to those in question. Once set-up, the invitation printed and mailed containing the toll-free response number, I was then able to decide when I wanted to listen to the RSVPs, day-by-day. That helped set a high tone for the dinner.ĥ. Grasshopper allowed me to select a “voice talent” to record the script I prepared, and I chose a woman with a clear and elegant British accent. Not only was Grasshopper convenient to my guests, who could call free of charge from anywhere at all hours of the day or night, their numerous and sometimes lengthy phone messages did NOT “clog-up” the nonprofit’s primitive messaging system, nor mine. I also kept the line open through the evening of the event out of courtesy and for a few days afterward.ģ. I scripted the toll free telephone response line to include three separate recordings for: a) RSVP “yes” b) RSVP “no” and c) driving directions, instructions regarding attire, and the telephone number of the venue. Considering what we gained from using Grasshopper, that was an incredibly reasonable price.Ģ. At the time, engaging Grasshopper ended up costing my organization approximately $100 from start to finish. I could also have the line open for a full month. This was very convenient for our potential guests, who lived all over Texas. I secured a toll-free response line that anyone could call, 24-7 from any location, free of charge. Here are a few things I was able to accomplish by using this platform.ġ. Perri, Mitchell and their colleagues suggest Aenocyon, meaning “terrible wolf.” But the researchers don’t expect their findings to completely overturn tradition, and Aenocyon dirus would likely continue to be called the dire wolf. In technical terms, the new findings mean dire wolves may need a new genus name to indicate they are no longer part of the genus Canis, to which gray wolves belong. “The study of ancient DNA and proteins from fossil bones is rapidly rewriting the ice age and more recent history of North America’s mammals,” Zazula says. The dire wolf’s new identity means that many previous assumptions-down to what it looked like in life-require reinvestigation. In fact, the similarity between the two has led gray wolves to be taken as proxies for dire wolf biology and behavior, from pack dynamics to the sound of the animal’s howls. “These results totally shake up the idea that dire wolves were just bigger cousins of gray wolves,” says Yukon paleontologist Grant Zazula, who was not involved in the new study. In the case of dire and gray wolves, lives of chasing large herbivores to catch some meat on the hoof resulted in two different canid lineages independently producing wolflike forms. Sometimes such convergence is only rough, such as both birds and bats evolving wings despite their differing anatomy. The strong resemblance between the two, the researchers say, is a case of convergent evolution, whereby different species develop similar adaptations-or even appearances-thanks to a similar way of life. Dire wolves, it now appeared, had evolved in the Americas and had no close kinship with the gray wolves from Eurasia the last time gray wolves and dire wolves shared a common ancestor was about 5.7 million years ago. “I think I can speak for the whole group when I say the results were definitely a surprise,” Perri says.Īfter sequencing five genomes from dire wolf fossils between 50,000 and 13,000 years old, the researchers found that the animals belonged to a much older lineage of dogs. Preliminary genetic analyses indicated that dire and gray wolves were not close relatives. “My hunch was that dire wolves were possibly a specialized lineage or subspecies of gray wolf,” Mitchell says.īut the new evidence told a different story. Sometimes it is difficult to tell them apart. For decades, paleontologists have remarked on how similar the bones of dire wolves and gray wolves are. One of the researchers’ questions was how dire wolves were related to other wolves. At the same time, geneticist and co-author Kieren Mitchell of the University of Adelaide in Australia was also trying to extract and study ancient DNA from dire wolf remains-as were other labs that eventually collaborated on the project. collecting dire wolf samples and see what we could get, since no one had managed to get DNA out of dire wolf samples at that point,” says Durham University archaeologist and study co-author Angela Perri. “For me, it started with a decision to road-trip around the U.S. ![]() ![]() The new study, published in January in Nature, began as an effort to understand dire wolves’ biological basics. Now some well-preserved DNA seems to be fundamentally changing the story. It had long been assumed that dire wolves made themselves at home in North America before gray wolves followed them across the Bering Land Bridge from Eurasia. Though these canids had clearly evolved to handle the mastodons, horses, bison and other large herbivores then roaming the Americas, skeletal resemblances between dire wolves and the smaller gray wolves of today suggested a close kinship. The dire wolves’ tar-preserved remains reveal an imposing hunter up to six feet long, with skull and jaw adaptations to take down enormous, struggling megafauna. The La Brea asphalt seeps famously document how prey animals mired in tar lured many of these ice age predators to a sticky death. Their remains have been found throughout much of the Americas, from Idaho to Bolivia. But a new study of dire wolf genetics has startled paleontologists: it found that these animals were not wolves at all, but rather the last of a dog lineage that evolved in North America.Įver since they were first described in the 1850s, dire wolves have captured modern humans’ imagination. And the massive canids have even received some time in the spotlight thanks to the television series Game of Thrones. Thousands of these extinct Pleistocene carnivores have been recovered from the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. ![]() 12/18/2023 0 Comments Phoenix zoo lights 2021![]() “One of my favorite things is to be a fly on the wall while people are there, and just sit and listen to the visitors, especially the kids,” Davis says.
